When it comes to professional portraits I look for lighting first, in this case natural light at a Boston stadium. It has to come across the subjects face in a flattering way that creates gentle shadows. Lighting that is "flat", or the same on both sides of the face, can be very uninteresting. Placing a subject where there is a highlight and a shadow side of the face is key. The overhang in this stadium created the perfect lighting scenario, while also allowing me to place the subject in a way that creates a background with great depth and just enough interest to add to the frame. I was also drawn to the warmth of the brick that goes with the red shirt.
